LLA 101 AN INTRODUCTION TO LEGAL SKILLS: HOW TO THINK LIKE A LAWYER
This short course is intended to assist practitioners who are studying law for the first time and in particular employment law by introducing them to fundamental knowledge, practices, tools and skills required to successfully complete the courses presented by the Labour Law Academy (Pty) Ltd. The short covers subject matter such as how to read a reported legal case, finding the applicable section of the Act, understanding and interpreting legislation, applying the law, understanding what is relevant, and deriving the legal principle from a case.
Objectives of this course
There are three categories of results or outcomes which are expected to be gained on completion of this course:-
You will gain in knowledge by understanding
· the problem solving approach to legal analysis;
· legal problems in the context of the law applicable to a certain situation.
You will acquire skills by being able to-
· work through a legal problem in an organised and systematic way;
· interpret, understand and identify the relevant facts which arise from the description of a particular incident or situation;
· identify the legal issue/s which arise from the incident;
· identify the correct legislation and rules which apply to the incident;
· distinguish the facts of one incident from another, and one court decision from another;
· apply the legislation and case law to the incident, and
· give advice to clients.
You will gain the values of
· the ability to think logically;
· the ability to think critically;
· to evaluate various solutions;
· to understand the concept of fairness.
